Syriac - Aramaic Peshittā Bible Text

Chapter 1

, The former book I wrote, Oh Theophilus, about all the things which our Lord Jesus the Messiah did and taught from the beginning
up until that day when he was taken up, after he had instructed those Apostles whom he had chosen by the Holy Spirit
Those to whom also he revealed himself alive after he had suffered, by numerous signs, during forty days, while he was seen by them, and spoke about the Realm of God
And while he ate bread with them, he instructed them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father: He, about whom you have heard from me
For John baptized with water, and you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit, after not many days
? Now while they gathered, they asked him and said to him: Our Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel
He said to them: It is not yours to know the time, or those dates, which the Father has decided by his own authority
But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will receive power, and will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and also among the Samaritans, and unto the ends of the earth
And as he spoke these things, they watched him while he was taken up, and a cloud received him, and he was hidden from their eyes
, And while they were staring into heaven as he was departing, two men were found standing near them, in white raiment
And they said to them: Galilean men, why are you standing and staring into heaven? This Jesus, who is taken up from you to heaven, so likewise will he come, just as you have seen him ascend to heaven
And afterwards they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called the place of Olives, which was near to Jerusalem, and a distance of about seven furlongs from it
And when they arrived, they went to an upper room; where were Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, and Philip, and Thomas, and Matthew, and Bartholomew, and James the son of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the son of James
All these joined in continuous prayer, with one soul, together with the women, and with Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren
: And among them in those days arose Simon Kephas amid the disciples, - the persons there gathered being about one hundred and twenty, - and said
Men, Brothers, it was right that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold, thru David's mouth, concerning Judas who was guide to them that arrested Jesus
For he was numbered with us, and had a part in this ministry
He bought a field with the reward of sin, and he fell headlong on the ground, and burst wide open, and all his insides poured out
And this became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, and thus the field was called, in the language of the region, Khakel-Dema, which means Field of Blood
For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let his dwelling be desolate, and let no one live in it; and, let another take his office
It should therefore be, that one of these men, who were among us the whole time that our Lord Jesus entered in and went out with us
Who went out from the baptism of John, until the day he was taken up from us, - that he may be with us as a witness of His resurrection
And they nominated two, Joseph called Bar-Shaba, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias
, And after they prayed, they said: You, Lord, know what is in the hearts of everyone, show us which you have chosen of these two
that he should take part in this ministry and Apostolate, which Judas broke away from, to go to his place
And they drew lots, and it came upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven Apostles

Chapter 2

, And after the days of Pentecost came, as all were gathered together
there was suddenly a sound from heaven, like a wailing wind, and filled that whole house in which they were sitting
And there appeared to them were tongues like flame, which separated and rested upon everyone of them
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and were driven to speak in other languages, just as the Spirit gave them to speak
Now there at Jerusalem were staying men who were God-fearing, Jews from all the nations under heaven
And when that sound happened, all the people assembled together; and they were bewildered, because they all heard them speaking in their own languages
? And they were all amazed, and wondered, while saying to one another: These who speak, behold, are not all of them Galileans
? And how do we hear each man in the language to which we were born
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and those living between the rivers, Jews and Cappadocians, and those from the region of Pontus and of Asia
and those from the region of Phrygia, and of Pamphylia, and of Egypt, and of the parts of Lybia near Cyrene, and those who have come from Rome, Jews and new converts
and those from Crete, and Arabians Yet, we hear them speak in our own languages of the wonders of God
? And they all wondered and were amazed, saying one to another: What is all this
But others made fun of them, saying: They have been drinking new wine, and are now drunk
And afterwards Simon Kephas rose up, with the eleven Apostles, and raised his voice, and said to them: Men, Jews, and all you that live in Jerusalem; let this be known to you, and heed my words
For it is not as you think that these men are drunk: for behold, up until now it is only the third hour
: But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel
It will be in the last days, said God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all mankind: and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams
And even on my servants and my handmaids will I pour my Spirit, in those days, and they will prophesy
And I will give signs in heaven, and wonders on earth, blood, and fire, and plumes of smoke
And the sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and wondrous day of the Lord will come
And it will be that all who will call on the name of the Lord will be saved
Men, sons of Israel, hear these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man was shown among you by God, by those miracles and with signs which God did among you by his hand, as you yourselves know;
This man, who was set apart for this, by the foreknowledge and the will of God, you delivered into the hands of the wicked, and have crucified and killed him
But God has raised him, and has undone the ties to the grave; because it was impossible that he be held in the grave
For David said of him: I saw my Lord before me always, for he is on my right hand, so that I will not be shaken
, Therefore my heart rejoices, and my prayers exult, and my body, too, will rest in the hope
that you will not abandon my soul in the grave, nor will you allow your innocent one to see decay
you have revealed to me the way of life, you will fill me with joy thru your presence
Men, Brothers, allow me to speak plainly to you of the patriarch David, who is dead, and also buried, and his grave is with us to this day
For he was a prophet, and he knew, that God had sworn him an oath: Of your descendants, I will confirm [a king] on your throne
And he foresaw, and spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not left in the grave, nor did his body see decay
This Jesus, God raised, and we all are his witnesses
And this is he, who at the right hand of God is exalted, and has received from the Father the promise about the Holy Spirit, and has poured out this gift which, behold, you see and hear
For David has not went up into heaven, because he himself said: The Lord said to my Lord, sit yourself at my right hand,
until I place your enemies as a footstool for your feet
Truly, therefore, let all the house of Israel know, that God has made this Jesus that Lord and Messiah, whom you crucified
? And when they heard these things, they were touched in their heart; and they said to Simon and to the rest of the Apostles: Brothers, what should we do
Simon said to them: Repent, and be baptized every one of you, in the name of the Lord Jesus, for the forgiveness of sins, so that you may receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
For the promise was to you, and to your children, and to all those far away whom God will call
And with many other words he would give witness to them, and urge them, saying: Save yourselves from this wrongly self-willed generation
And some of them readily received his word, and believed, and were baptized And there were added on that day, about three thousand souls
And they remained faithful to the teaching of the Apostles, and were united together in prayer, and in the breaking of the Eucharist
And the many miracles that happened and signs worked by the hands of the Apostles made a deep impression in Jerusalem
And all those who believed, were as one, and everything they owned was held in common
And those who had a possession would sell it, and shared with everyone according to whatever was in need
And they went every day as a body to the temple, and at home, they were breaking the bread and while receiving food were rejoicing, and so in the simplicity of their hearts
And they praised God, and were looked up to by everyone And our Lord would add daily to those who lived among the congregation

Chapter 3

, And it happened, when Simon Kephas and John were going up to the temple together for the time of prayer, at the ninth hour
and behold, a certain man crippled from birth was being carried by men, those men being used to bringing and setting him at the gate of the temple that was called "the Beautiful", that he might beg for alms of those going into the temple
This man, when he saw Simon and John going into the temple, begged from them to give him alms
And Simon and John looked at him, and said to him: Look at us
And he looked at them, expecting to get something from them
Simon said to him: I have not gold nor silver, but I will give you what I have - in the name of our Lord Jesus Messiah, the Nazarene, get up and walk
And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up, and instantly his feet and his heels were strengthened
And he jumped up, and stood, and walked, and he went in with them into the temple, while walking, and jumping, and praising God
And all the people saw him as he was walking and praising God
And they recognized that he was that beggar who sat all day and ask for alms at the gate called "the Beautiful", and they were filled with astonishment and surprise at what had happened
And as he was holding on to Simon and John, all the people marveling ran to them at the portico called Solomon's
And so when Simon saw, he answered and said to them: Men, sons of Israel, why are you surprise by this ? or why do you stare at us as if we had made this man walk by our own power or authority
The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Son Jesus, He whom you handed over, and disowned in the presence of Pilate, after he saw it fit to set him free
But you disowned the Holy and just One, and asked that a murderer be given to you
And that Prince of Life you killed, whom God raised from the dead, and all of us are his witnesses
And, in the faith of His name, by this man whom you see and know, He has strengthened and healed and the faith that is in him has given the man this health you all see
, But now I know, my brothers, that you did this through ignorance, as did your leaders as well
and God, according as he had foretold by the mouths of all the prophets that the Messiah would suffer, has in this way fulfilled it
Repent, therefore, and be converted, so that your sins may be wiped out before the times of rest in the presence of the Lord come to you
And He may send Him to you, who was made ready for you, Jesus the Messiah,
whom the heavens must keep until the completion of the times of those things, which God has spoken thru the mouths of His Holy Prophets of old
For Moses said: The Lord will raise up to you a prophet like me, from among your brothers, hear him in all that he will say to you
And it will be, that every soul who will not hear to that prophet, that soul will be lost from his people
And all the prophets that have been, from Samuel and those after him, have spoken and proclaimed about these days
you are the children of the prophets, and that covenant which God made with our fathers, when he said to Abraham, that from in your line will all the tribes of earth be blessed
he has first appointed to you, and God has sent his Son to bless you, if you will be converted, and repent your wickedness

Chapter 4

, And while they were speaking these words to the people, the priests and Sadducees and leaders of the temple arose against them
being upset with them, that they taught the people, and preached a resurrection from the dead by the Messiah
And they arrested them, and kept them under watch until the next day, because evening was drawing near
And many who had heard the word, believed, and they were, in number, about five thousand men
, And the next day, the leaders and the Elders and the Scribes gathered
and also Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and those who were related to the high priests
? And after they had set them in their midst, they were questioning them: By what power or what name, have you done this
! Then Simon Kephas was filled with the Holy Spirit, and said to them: You leaders of the people, and Elders of the house of Israel, listen
, If we are judged by you today, about the act of kindness done to the cripple man, and by what means he was healed
be it known to you, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Messiah the Nazarene, whom you crucified, and whom God has raised from the dead, now, by the same, this man stand here before you healed
This is the stone, which you builders rejected, and has become the cornerstone
And there is not salvation by any other man, for there is not under heaven another name given to men, by which to have Life
And when they heard the words which Simon and John spoke so confidently, whom they considered illiterates, and they were surprised by them, and recognized them as associates of Jesus
And they saw the crippled man who had been healed standing near them, and they were unable to say anything against them
: Then they ordered to have them removed from their council, and said one to another
What should we do to these men? For now that a visible miracle has been performed by them that's known to all that live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it
But so the news of it does not spread among the people, let us threaten them from speaking any more to any man in this name
And they called them in, and ordered them to never speak nor teach at all in the name of Jesus
Simon Kephas and John answered, and said to them: You must judge whether it is right to God, that we listen to you more than to God
For we are unable to refrain from speaking about what we have seen and heard
And they warned them, and freed them For they found no grounds to charge them with because of the people, for everyone praised God for what had happened;
for the man whom this miracle of healing had been performed on was more than forty years old
And when they were freed, they went back to their brothers, and told them everything the priests and Elders had said
And those, when they heard it, altogether lifted up their voice to God and said: Lord, you are God, He who has made heaven, and earth, and the seas, and every thing in them
? And You are He who spoke thru the Holy Spirit by the mouth of David your servant: Why do the nations rage, and the people plot in vain
The kings of the earth and the rulers have risen up, and aligned together against the Lord, and against his anointed
For, truly, against your holy Son Jesus whom you have anointed, Herod and Pilate, with the pagan nations and the peoples of Israel, have been aligned together in this city
to do whatever your hand and your will predetermined to be done
And also now, Lord, behold and see their threats, and grant to your servants, that they may confidently preach your word
while you extend your hand for healing and miracles and wonders, to be done in the name of your Son, the Holy One, Jesus
And when they had prayed and made supplications, the place in which they were gathered was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God boldly
And the group of the men that believed were united with one heart and mind, and not one of them claimed the property he possessed as his own, but whatever was theirs was the community's
And the Apostles testified with great power to the resurrection of Jesus Messiah, and great grace was with them all
And no one among them was lacking, for those who possessed lands or houses would sell them, and brought the proceeds of whatever was sold
and present it to the Apostles, and so distributed to every one, as to who was in need
, And Joseph, who by the Apostles was surnamed BarNabas, - which means Son of Encouragement, - a Levite of the region of Cyprus
had land, and he sold it, and brought the proceeds from it, and presented it to the Apostles

Chapter 5

, And a certain man whose name was Ananias, with his wife whose name was Sapphira, sold his land
and took away part of the proceeds and hid it, while his wife knew of it, and he brought part of the money, and presented it to the Apostles
And Simon said to him: Ananias, why has Satan so filled your heart, so you should lie against the Holy Spirit, and hide the money of the proceeds from the land ?
Was it not your own before it was sold ? And when sold, again you had control over the proceeds of it Why have you set your heart to do this scheme? You have not lied before men, but before God
And when Ananias heard these words, he fell down, and died And a profound impression was made on all those that heard about it
And those young among them got up, and wrapped him up, and took him out and buried him
And after three hours had passed, his wife also came in, without knowing what had happened
Simon said to her: Tell me, if you sold the land for these price? And she said: Yes, for this price
Simon said to her: Since you chose to test the Spirit of the Lord, now, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will take you out
And instantly she fell down at their feet, and died And those young men came in, and found her dead, and they wrapped her up to take away, and buried her by the side of her husband
And a profound impression was made on all the church*, and on all of those that heard of it
And there were many signs and wonders performed by the Apostles among the people And they all in common gathered at the Portico of Solomon
And no one else dared to touch them, instead, the people extolled them
And more increased to those who believed the Lord, numbers of both men and of women
So that they took the ill out into the streets laid on beds, so when if Simon were to pass, at least his shadow might fall on them
And many came to them from other cities around Jerusalem, bringing the ill and those who had unclean spirits, and all of them were healed
And envy filled the high priest, and all those with him who were of the doctrine of the Sadducees
And they arrested the Apostles, and took and bound them in prison
: Then at night the angel of the Lord opened the door of the prison, and let them out, and said to them
Go, stand in the temple, and speak to the people all these Words of Life
And they went out at dawn and entered the temple, and taught And the high priest and those with him convened with their supporters and the Elders of Israel, and sent for the prison to bring out the Apostles
, And when those who were sent by them went, they did not find them in the prison and they returned
and said: We found the prison securely locked, and also the guards who stood at the door, and we opened it, but found no one there
And when the high priests and leaders of the temple heard these words, they were astonished at them, and thought " What is this ? "
And a man came and reported to them: Those men whom you locked up in prison, behold, they are standing in the temple and teaching the people
Then the leaders went with guards to bring them in without using force, for they were afraid that the people might stone them
: And when they had brought them in to stand before the whole council, the high priest began to say to them
Did we not indeed warn you to not teach anyone in this name ? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you want to fix the guilt of this man's death on us
And Simon, with the Apostles, replied and said to them: It is more worthy to be amenable towards God than to men
The God of our fathers has raised up Jesus, He whom you killed when you hung Him on a tree
God has established Him as a Prince and Savior; and has exalted Him at His right hand, so that He might give forgiveness for the repentance of sins to Israel
And we are the witnesses of these words, and also the Holy Spirit, He, whom God gives to those who believe in Him
And when they heard these things they were infuriated with anger, and were contemplating to kill them
Then one of the Pharisees got up whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, and respected by all the people, and he ordered them to take the Apostles outside for a short time
And he said to them: Men, sons of Israel, be yourselves careful, and consider what is the best way to deal with these men
For not long ago, Theudas rose up, and said of himself that he was someone important, and there were about four hundred men who followed him And he was killed and those who followed him were scattered and nothing became of it
And after him, Judas a Galilean rose up, at the time of the census tax, and he attracted many people behind him And he died, and all those who followed him were scattered
And now I say to you: Abstain from these men, and leave them alone For if this belief and this work originates from men, they will break up and come to nothing
But if it is from God, it is not in your power to stop it, and you may find yourselves standing against God
And they listened to him, and they called in the Apostles, and had them scourged, and warned them not to teach in the name of Jesus, and released them
And so they left from their presence, glad that they were worthy to suffer humiliation on account of that name
And they did not cease to teach every day in the temple and at home, and to preach about our Lord Jesus the Messiah

Chapter 6

And in those days, when there was an increase of disciples, the Greek disciples complained against the Hebrew ones, because their widows were overlooked in the everyday distributions
And the twelve Apostles called a full meeting of the disciples, and said to them: It is not right that we should neglect the word of God to serve tables
Therefore brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good reputation, men full of the Spirit of the Lord, and of wisdom, and we will hand over this issue to them:
and we will continue in prayer, and in the service of the Word
And this proposal was approved by all the people And they selected Stephen, a man who was full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas, a convert of Antioch
These stood before the Apostles, and when they had prayed, they laid the hands on them
And the word of God spread, and the number of disciples increased greatly in Jerusalem, and many people from among the Jews submitted to the faith
And Stephen was full of grace and power, and he performed great signs and miracles among the people
And there came forward some from the synagogue which is called "the Freedmen" - Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and from Asia, and they debated with Stephen
And they were not able stand up against the wisdom and the Spirit that spoke thru him
Then they sent men off, and told them to say: We have heard him speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God
And they stirred up the people, and the Elders, and the Scribes, and they came to stand up to him, and arrest him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin
And they put up false witnesses who said: This man never stops speaking words contrary to the Law, and against this Holy Place
For we have heard him say that this Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place, and will alter the traditions that Moses handed down to you
And all those sitting in the Sanhedrin looked at him, and they saw his face as the face of an angel

Chapter 7

? And the high priest asked him: Were these things so
And he said: Men, brothers of us, and fathers of us, hear me out The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was between the two rivers* before he settled in Charran
and he said to him: Leave your country, and your race, and go to a land which I will present to you
And then Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans, and settled in Charran And from there, after his father died, God moved him to this land, where you are living today
And he did not give him even a step of a foot in it for his own, but he promised that he would give it to him, as an inheritance to him and to his line, while he had yet no son
And God spoke with him, and said to him: Your line will be exiles in a foreign land, where they would be slaves, and oppressed for four hundred years
And I will judge the nation which enslaves them, God said And after this, they will leave, and worship me in this place
And he gave them the covenant of circumcision And then he fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day And Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered our twelve Patriarchs
, And those Patriarchs envied Joseph, and sold him into Egypt, but God was with him
and rescued him from all his miseries and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt, and over all his household
And there was famine and great suffering in all Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, and our ancestors were without food
And when Jacob heard that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there first
And when they went the second time, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and the family of Joseph was known to Pharaoh
And Joseph sent and brought is father Jacob, and all his family, and they numbered seventy five souls
And Jacob went down into Egypt; and he died there, he and our ancestors
And he was brought back to Sychem, and was buried in the tomb which Abraham bought with money from the sons of Emmor
And as the time drew near to fulfill the promise which God had promised to Abraham, the people had increased and became strong in Egypt
until another king rose up over Egypt, who did not know Joseph
And he exploited our race, and ill-treated our ancestors, and ordered that their male infants be cast away, so they might not live
At at that time was Moses born, and he was pleasing to God, and he was reared for three months in his father's house
And when he had been cast away by his mother, the daughter of Pharaoh found him, and brought him up as her own son
And Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was accomplished in his words, and in his deeds as well
And when he was forty years old, it entered his heart to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel
And he saw one of the sons of his race persecuted, and he avenged him, and went to his defense, and killed the Egyptian who did him wrong
And he thought that his brothers, the sons of Israel, would have understood, that by his hand God would liberate them, but they did not understand
And on another day he came across them as they were arguing with one another And he tried to reconcile them, saying: Men, you are brothers, why do you want to hurt each other
? But he who wronged his fellow, pushed him away, and said to him: Who appointed you our leader and judge
? Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday
And Moses fled when he heard this, and he went to stay in the land of Midian And there he had two sons
And after forty years had passed for him there, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of the mount of Sinai, in a fire that burned in a bush
: And when Moses saw it, he was amazed at the vision, and as he came nearer to see it, the Lord, in a voice, said to him
I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob And Moses trembled, and dared not to look at the vision
And the Lord said to him: Take off your sandals from your feet, for the ground you stand on is holy
I have indeed seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their agonizing, and have come down to deliver them And now, come, I will send you to Egypt
This Moses whom they disowned by saying, Who appointed you our leader and judge ? Him, this one, God sent to them to be leader and redeemer, by the hands of the angel that appeared to him in the bush
This was he that brought them out, working miracles and wonders and works of power in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the desert for forty years
This Moses is the man who said to the sons of Israel: The Lord God will raise up a prophet for you, like me, from among your brothers - listen to him
It was he, who was in the assemblage in the wilderness, with the angel that spoke with him and with our ancestors at Mount Sinai, and it was he who received the Living Words to give us
; And our ancestors did not want to heed him, but instead left him, and returned, set in their hearts, to Egypt
when they said to Aaron: Make us gods who may lead us, because we know not what has happened to this Moses who led us from the land of Egypt
And he made them a calf in those days, and they offered sacrifices to idols, and rejoiced in the work of their hands
And God turned away, and gave them up to worship the arrays of the skies, as it is written in the book of the prophets: Did you, for forty years, in the wilderness, present to me a slain animal or a sacrifice, you sons of Israel ?
But you carried the tent of Malchum, and the star of the god Rephon, idols which you had made, that you might worship them I will exile you beyond Babylon
Behold, our ancestors had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, as he who spoke to Moses ordered it made in the likeness which he had showed him
And our ancestors, with Joshua, indeed brought this same tent, into the land which God gave them as an inheritance from those nations which he cast out before them, and it was carried until the days of David
He, who found mercy before God, asked that he might find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob
But Solomon built the house
: And the Most High does not live in a work of hands, as the prophet said
Heaven is my throne, and earth a footrest under my feet What can a house you will build for me be ? says the Lord: or, what can be the place of my rest
Behold, has not my hand made all these things ?
O [ you, so ] stubborn, and pagan in heart and in hearing, do you always set yourselves against the Holy Spirit, as were your ancestors, and so also you
? For which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute and kill, those, who foretold the coming of the Just One, whom you handed over and killed
And you have received the Law by way of the ordination of angels, and have not kept it
And when they heard this, they were themselves filled with anger, and they ground their teeth at him
And he, while full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, looked towards heaven, and saw the resplendence of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God
And he said: Behold, I see heaven opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God
And they shouted out with a loud voices, and covered their ears, and all rushed at him
And they grabbed hold of him, and took him outside the city, and stoned him And those who testified against him, laid their clothes at the feet of a certain young man who was called Saul
And they stoned Stephen, while he prayed and said: Our Lord, Jesus, receive my spirit
And while he kneeled down, he shouted with loud voice, and said: Our Lord, do not hold this sin against them And after he had said this, he went to his rest
