. And there was one who was ill, Lazarus, of the town of Bethany, the
brother of Mary and Martha
It was the same Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with
ointment, and
wiped them with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill
. And his two sisters sent for Jesus, and said: Lord, he,
who you love, is ill
. And Jesus said: This illness will end not in death, but
in the
glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it
. Now Jesus loved Martha and Mary, and Lazarus
, And yet, when he heard that he was ill, he stayed there, where
he was, for two days
. Before he said to his disciples: Come, let us go again to Judaea
? His disciples said: Teacher, the Jews are still wanting to
stone you, and you go there
Jesus replied: Are there not twelve hours in the day ? And if a
man walks in the daytime, he will not fall; because he has the light of the
world to see by
. But if one walks in the night, he will fall, because there is
no light in him
. Jesus said that and afterwards added: Lazarus our
friend rests. But I will go to awake him
. His disciples say to him: Lord, if he sleeps, he is
recovering
. But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought, he spoke of the
sleep of resting
. Then Jesus said to them plainly; Lazarus is dead
. And I am glad for your sake, that I was not there, so that
you may
believe. But let us go there
. Thomas, - called the Twin - , said to his fellow disciples: Let us
also go, and die with him
. And Jesus came to Bethany, and found that he had been in the
tomb
four days
. Now Bethany was close to Jerusalem, about two miles from
it
. And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console
their hearts about their brother
. And Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went out to meet
him; but Mary sat in the house
. And Martha said to Jesus: Lord, if you had been here, my
brother would not have died
. But even now, I know, that whatever you will ask of God, he will
give you it
. Jesus said to her: Your brother will rise
. Martha said to him: I know, that he will rise on the last
day, in the resurrection
. Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection, and Life. And he that
believes in me, even if he should die, will yet Live
? And every one that lives, and yet believes in me, will not
ever die. Do you believe so
. She said to him: Yes, Lord; I believe, that you are the Messiah,
the Son of God, who has come into the world
. And having said this, she went and called her sister
Mary, and said to her privately: Our teacher has come and is calling for you
. And Mary, when she heard that, got up quickly, and went to meet
him
. And Jesus had not yet come into the village, but still at the place
where Martha met him
When the Jews who were also in the house consoling
her, saw Mary get up quickly to leave, they followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to weep
And Mary went to Jesus, and as soon as she saw him, fell
at his feet, and said to him: If you had been here, Lord, my brother would not
have died
. And when Jesus saw her weeping, and the weeping of the Jews who
had come with
her, he sighed in emotion, as his heart was moved
. And he said: Where have you laid him ? They said to him: Lord,
come, and see
. And Jesus came to tears
! And the Jews said: See how much he loved him
? And some said: This man opened the eyes of the blind
man, could he not have done something to keep this man from death
. And Jesus, still innerly distraught, came to the tomb. Now the
tomb
was a cave, and a stone was laid at its opening
And Jesus said: Take away this stone. Martha, the
dead man's sister, said to him: Lord, by this time he will smell, this is the fourth day
? Jesus said to her: Did I not tell you, that if you
would believe you will see the glory of God
. And so they took away the stone. And Jesus looked up to
heaven, and
said: Father, I thank You, for You have heard me
And I know that You always hear me; I say these things for
the sake of this
crowd standing here, that they may believe that
it was You who sent me
! And when he had said this, he called out with a loud voice: Lazarus,
come out here
And the dead man came out, his hands and his feet bound
with cloth-bands, and a cloth round his face. Jesus said to them: Unloosen him, and
let him go
. And many of the Jews who had come to Mary, when they saw what Jesus
did, believed in him
. But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them of what Jesus
had done
. And the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together, and said:
What will we do? For this man performs many miracles
. And if we allow him to do this, all the people will believe in him;
and the Romans will come, and will take away our land and our nation
. Now one of them, named Caiaphas, was the high priest that year;
and he said to them: You do not understand anything
. Do you not realize that it is better for us that one man
dies for the sake of the nation, than for the whole nation to be lost
51
And he did not say this out of his own
volition, but
as the high priest of that year making the prophecy, that Jesus was about to die
for the nation
52
. and not only for the nation, but to also gather together
the scattered children of God
53
. And from that day on, they schemed to kill him
54
And Jesus did not walk about openly among the Jews; but
left them
for a town called Ephraim, near the desert, and stayed there
with his disciples
55
. And the Jewish Passover drew near, and many had gone up from the
villages to Jerusalem, to purify themselves before the celebration
56
? And they looked for Jesus, saying one to another
while in the
temple: What do you think ? Will he come to the celebration or not
57
And the chief priests and the Pharisees had by now given
orders that if any
one knew where he was must inform them so that they might arrest
him
. And six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus
was, he whom Jesus had raised from the dead
. And they made a banquet for him there: and Martha served
them, and Lazarus
was one of the guests with him
And Mary took an alabaster flask of the best costly pistacio
perfume, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her
hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume
, Then said Judas Iscariot, one of the disciples - he that was about to
betray him
? Why wasn't this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and given
to the poor
And this he said, not out of
concern for the poor, but because he
was thief, and held the moneybag, and carried what was put in it
. But Jesus said: Leave her alone; she has kept it for the day of my
burial
. For you will always have the poor, but you will not always
have me
And great crowds of the Jews heard that he was there: and they
came, not for Jesus alone, but also that they might see Lazarus, whom
he raised from the dead
, And the chief priests thought about killing Lazarus, too
. for many of the Jews, because of him, were leaving and believing in
Jesus
, And the next day, a great crowd who had come to the feast, when
they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem
took palm branches and came out to meet him. And they
shouted: Hosanna, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord, the king
of Israel
. And Jesus found a donkey, and sat upon it; as it is written
. Fear not, Oh daughter of Zion. Behold, your king comes to you
riding a donkey's colt
At the time, his disciples did not understand all
this, but after
Jesus was glorified, then his disciples recalled that these things were
written of him, and that they did them to him
. And the crowd that had been with him, gave witness that he had
called Lazarus from the tomb, and raised him from the dead
. And for this, large crowds went out to meet him, as they
heard he had done this miracle
. But the Pharisees said one to another: Do you see, that
you are
gaining nothing? For now the whole world follows him
. And there were also some Greeks among the people who had
gone up to
worship at the celebration
. These came and approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,
and said to him: Sir, we wish to see Jesus
. Philip came and told Andrew; and Andrew and Philip told Jesus
. And Jesus answered them: The hour has come for the Son
of Man to be glorified
Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a grain of wheat
should fall
and die on the ground, it remains alone; but if it dies, it yields much
fruit
. Whosoever loves his life, will lose it; and he that hates his life,
in this world, will keep it to Life Eternal
. If any one should serve me, let him come and follow me, and where I am,
there also will my servant be. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor
. Behold, now is my soul troubled, yet what should I say ? My Father,
save me from this hour ? But it was for this that came I to this hour
. Father, glorify your name! And a voice was heard from heaven: I have
glorified it, and I will glorify it again

name, he will teach you every thing, and will remind you of all that I said to
you
Peace I leave with you, my own peace I give to you. It is not as the
world gives, that I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor be afraid
You have heard what I said to you that I go away,
and will return. If you loved me, you would be glad that I go to my Father; for
my
Father is greater than I
. And now, behold, I have told you, before it happens, so that
when it has happened, you may believe
. From hereon I will not talk with you much longer, for the
prince of this
world comes, and has nothing in me
. But that the world may know, that I love my Father, and as my Father
told me, I do so. Get up, let us leave here
. I am the true vine; and my Father is the
vine-grower
Every branch on me which does not
give fruit, he takes off,
and that which gives fruits, he prunes it, so it may give more fruit
. You already are pruned, because of the
word I have held
with you
Stay in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
give fruit by
itself, unless it stays on the vine, so too, neither can you, unless you stay in
me
. I am the vine, and you are the branches. He that
stays in me, and I in him, yields plentiful fruit, for without me, you can do nothing
. Now unless a man stays in me, he is thrown
aside as a barren branch,
and they gather it up, and place it in the fire so it may burn
. But if you stay in me, and my words
stay in you,
whatever you will wish to ask, it will be given to you
. In this is the Father so glorified, that you bear
abundant fruit; and
that you be my disciples
. As my Father has loved me, I also have loved you:
stay in my
love
. If you shall keep my precepts, you will stay in the love of me, as I
have kept the precepts of my Father, and stay in his love
. These things have I spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and
that your joy may be full
. This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you
. There is no greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for
his friends
. You are my friends, if you do all that I command you
I no longer call you servants; because a servant
does not know what
his master does; but I have called you my friends, because, whatever I have heard
from my Father, I have made known to you
It is not you that chose me, but I that have chosen you; and I have
appointed you, that you also should go and yield fruit, and that your fruits
continue, so that whatever you may ask of my Father in my name, he may
give it you
. These things I command you, that you should love one another
. And if the world hates you, so you know, that it hated me before you
And if you were of the world, the world would love what is of it. But
you are not of the world, for I have chosen you out of the world, for this
reason,
the world hates you
Remember the words that I spoke to you, That there is no servant, who
is greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute
you, and if they have kept my teaching, they will keep yours, too
. But all these things will they do to you, because of my name,
and because they know not Him who sent me
. If I had not come and spoken with them, they would
be blameless, but as it is there is no excuse for their sins
. He that hates me, hates my Father also
If I had not performed before their eyes, works no other person
has done, they would have no sin, but they have both seen and have hated,
both me and even my Father
. that it may fulfill the words written in their
Law: They hated me without reason
But when the Redeemer comes, whom I will send to you from
the presence of my
Father, that Spirit of truth who issues from the presence of my Father, He will
give evidence about
me
. And you, too, will be witnesses, for you have been with me from the
outset
