: And after the captivity of Babylon, Jeconiah fathered Salathiel: Salathiel fathered Zerubbabel

. Jacob fathered Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called the Messiah
Therefore the total number of generations are, from Abraham to David, fourteen generations, and from David to the captivity of Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the captivity of Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was like this. While his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they lived together, she was found with child from through the Holy Spirit
. And Joseph her husband was a just man, and unwilling to expose her, yet he considered divorcing her privately
And while he thought about these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said: Joseph, son of David, fear not about taking Mary as your wife; for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Spirit
. and she is to have a son; and you are to call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins
22
: Now all this happened to fulfill what was spoken of the Lord by the prophet
The virgin shall be with child, and give birth to a son, and you will call his name Emmanuel, which means, Our God with us
. And when Joseph awoke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord directed him, and received his wife
. And he took not of her, until she had given birth to her first-born son, and she called is name Jesus

Chapter 2

, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of King Herod, there came Magi from the East to Jerusalem

inquiring: Where is the infant king of the Jews ? We have seen his star in the East, and have come to pay him homage

. And King Herod heard, and he became perturbed; and with him all Jerusalem

? And he summoned all the high priests and the scribes of the people, and inquired of them, Where was the Messiah to be born

: In Bethlehem of Judaea; they said: for this is what the prophet wrote

. And you, Bethlehem of Judaea, are not the little among the kings of Judaea, since from you shall come a king who will shepherd my people Israel

. Then Herod summoned the Magi to see him privately and find out from them what date the star had appeared to them

Then he sent them to Bethlehem, and said to them: Go, find out all about the child; and when you have found him, come and tell me, that I too may go and do him homage

And having heard what the king had said, they set out, and going there in front of them was the star they had seen in the East, until it came and stood over where the child was

. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced much, with great delight
And going into the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they fell down and worshipped him, and they opened their treasures, and presented to him gifts; gold, and myrrh, and frankincense
. And it was shown them in a dream, that they should not return to Herod. And by another route they went back to their country
And when they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said to him: Arise, take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt; and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child, so as to do away with him
. Then Joseph arose, took the child and his mother by night, and fled to Egypt
And he stayed there until the death of Herod; so as to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I called my son out of Egypt
Herod was furious when he saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi. And he sent to have killed all the male children in Bethlehem, and in all its surrounding areas, from a child of two years or less, according to the date that he had been careful to learn from the Magi
: It was then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled
A voice was heard in Rama, weeping and loud lamentation; it was Rachel weeping for her children, and unwilling to be comforted, because they were no more
, After King Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
and said: Arise, take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those have died who were seeking the life of the child
. And Joseph arose, and took the child and his mother, and came to the land of Israel
And when he heard that Archelaus was king in Judaea, in place of his father Herod, he feared to go there. And it was revealed to him in a dream, that he should go to the land of Galilee
And he came and dwelt in the city called Nazareth, so that what was said by the prophet might be fulfilled: that he will be called a Nazarene

Chapter 3

, And in those days came John the Baptist. And he would preach in the desert of Judaea

. and said: Repent; the Realm of Heaven is near

It is him for whom it was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: The voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths

. And as to this John, his clothes were of camel's hair, and loincloth; and his food was grasshoppers and wild honey

. Then they went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judaea, and all the area surrounding the Jordan

. And they would be baptized by him in the river Jordan, while they would confess of their sins

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees, that came to be baptized, he said to them: Generation of vipers, who has informed you to flee from the wrath that will come

. Therefore do the fruits that are worthy of repentance

And do not hope and say, within yourselves, that Abraham is our father: for I say to you, that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones
And Behold, the ax is placed on the root of trees. All the trees, therefore, which do not bring forth good fruit, will be cut [down], and thrown into the fire
I baptize you with water unto repentance; but he that will come after me is more powerful than me; he whose sandals I am not worthy to remove. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire
He whose winnowing fan is in hand will clean his threshing-floor. The wheat he will gather into his granaries; and the chaff he will burn with fire that does not extinguish
. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan for John, to be baptized by him
? But John refused him; and said, I ought to be baptized by you, and you come to me
And Jesus answered, and said to him: Allow it now, as such, for it is proper for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he allowed it
And when Jesus was baptized, he arose from the water and at once Heaven was opened to him; and he saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and it came upon him
. And a voice from Heaven said: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am pleased

Chapter 4

. Then Jesus was taken by the Holy Spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the Deceiver

. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and after which he hungered

. And the Tempter approached and said to him: If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread

But he replied, and said: It is written, that not by only bread does the son of man live; but by all the words that proceed from the mouth of God

, Then the Deceiver took him to the holy city, and set him on a parapet of the temple

and said to him: If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down: for it is written that he will order his angels take care of you, and in their hands they will carry you up, lest you should strike your foot against a stone

. Jesus said to him: Again, it is written, that you will not test the Lord your God

Again the Deceiver took him to a mountain that was very high, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their splendor

. and said to him: All these will I give you, if you will fall and worship me
Then Jesus said to him: Leave, Enemy; for it is written, that you will worship the Lord, your God; and him alone shall you serve
. Then the Deceiver left him: and Behold, angels came, and attended to him
. And when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee
. And he left Nazareth, and came and dwelt in Capernaum, on the side of the sea by the border of Zebulon and Naphthali
: So that might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, who said
; The land of Zebulon, the land of Naphthali, the way of the sea on the far side of Jordan, Galilee of the Nations
the people that dwelled in darkness, have seen a great light; and to those who dwell in the land and shadow of death, a light has arisen
. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say: Repent; for the Realm of Heaven is close
And as he was walking on the shore of the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Kephas, and Andrew his brother, who were casting nets into the sea; for they were fishermen
. And Jesus said to them: Follow me; and I will make you to become fishers of the sons of men
. And they at once left their nets, and followed him
And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, who were mending their nets. And Jesus called them
. And they at once left the boat and their father, and followed him
And Jesus would preach all over Galilee and taught in their congregations and preached the Gospel of the Realm; and he healed every disease and sickness among the people
And his fame was heard in all Syria. And they brought to him all those that were very ill with various diseases, and those that were afflicted with pain, and the possessed, and epileptics and paralysed; and he healed them
And there followed him great crowds from Galilee, and from the Decapolis [federation], and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond the Jordan

Chapter 5

: And when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up a hill; and when he sat down, his disciples gathered near him

: and he began to speak, and taught them, and said

! Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Realm of Heaven

! Blessed are the mourners: for they will be comforted

! Blessed are the humble: for they will inherit the earth

! Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for what is right: for they will be satisfied

! Blessed are the merciful: for upon them will be mercy

! Blessed are the pure in their hearts: for they will behold God

! Blessed are the peacemakers: for they will be called sons of God
! Blessed are they that are persecuted on account of what is right: for the Realm of Heaven is theirs
. Blessed are you, when they insult you and persecute you, and utter every false word of slander against you, because of me
. Rejoice then, and be glad: for your reward is great in Heaven. For they too so persecuted the prophets who were before you
You are the salt of the earth! But if the salt become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned ? It is fit for nothing; but to be thrown out, and be trod upon by men
. You are the light of the world! It is not possible to hide a city built upon a hill
. And they do not light a lamp and place it under a bushel; but upon a light stand, and it lights upon all that are in the house
Let your light shine before the sons of men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who is in Heaven
. Do not suppose that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets: I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill
For truly I say to you, that until heaven and earth will disappear, one dot or one letter will not pass from the law until all will be fulfilled
Therefore whoever will break one of these small commands and will so teach the sons of men, will be called little in the Realm of Heaven: but every one that will do and teach them, will be called great in the Realm of Heaven
For I say to you, that unless your righteousness will exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Realm of Heaven
. You have heard that it was said to the ancients, You will not kill: and every one that kills, is condemned to judgment
But I say to you, That every one who provokes his brother to anger, is condemned to judgment: and every one that said to his brother, I spit on you! is condemned to the council: and every one that will say, You Coward! is condemned to hell-fire
, If therefore you will bring your offering to the altar, and will there remember that your brother has any grudge against you
. leave there your offering before the altar, and go first and be reconciled with your brother; and then come and present your offering
Be at agreement with your adversary at law, forthwith, and while on the way with him; lest the adversary at law hand you over to the judge, and the Judge hand you over to the sheriff, and you are thrown into prison
. Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there until you have paid the last coin
. You have heard that it has been said, You should not commit adultery
. But I say to you, That whoever gazes on a woman lustfully, at once commits adultery with her in his heart
If therefore your right eye makes you stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from you; because it is better for you that your one member perish, than that your whole body fall into hell
And if your right hand make you stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you; because it is better for you that one of your members perish, than that your whole body fall into hell
. It has been said, That if a man puts away his wife, he must give her a decree of divorce
But I say to you, That whoever divorces his wife, except for a case of illicit relations, causes her to commit adultery: and he that takes the divorced woman, commits adultery
. Again, you have heard that it has been said to the ancients, You will not lie in your oaths; but you will complete your oaths to the Lord
: But I say to you, Swear not at all: not by Heaven, for it is the throne of God
. and not by the earth, for it is the footstool under his feet: and likewise not by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king
. And do not swear by your head, for you can not make one hair on it either black or white
. But let your words be, Yes, yes; or No, no; for whatever is beyond these is evil
. You have heard that it has been said: An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth
But I say to you: Stand not against evil; but if a person strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also
. And if one wants to sue you and take away your coat, leave to him also your cloak
. Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two
. Whoever demands of you, give to him: and whoever wants to borrow from you, deny him not
. You have heard that it has been said to love your neighbor and hate your enemy
But I say to you: Love your enemies; and bless him that insults you; and do good to him that hates you; and pray for them that lead you in bonds, and by force persecute you
that you may be the children of your Father that is in Heaven, who causes his sun to rise upon the good and upon the bad, and his rain descend upon the just and upon the unjust
? For, if you love them that love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do this
? And if you greet in peace your brethren only, what do you that is not common? Do not even tax collectors do this
. Be you therefore as perfect as your Father who is in Heaven is perfect

Chapter 6

Be careful in your alms giving, not to parade it before the sons of men, so that you may be seen of them: otherwise, you have no reward from your Father who is in Heaven

Therefore, when you do alms you should not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get praise from men. Truly I say to you, They have gotten their reward

: But you, when doing alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does

. that your alms may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you openly

And when you pray, you should not be like the hypocrites, who are fond of standing up in the congregations and on the corners of streets to pray, so that they may be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward
But you, when you pray enter into your inner room and close the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you openly

. And when you pray, be not chatterers like the heathen; for they expect to be heard for their many words

. Therefore, be not like them; for your Father knows what is needful for you, before you ask him

: In this manner, therefore, pray you: Our Father who is in Heaven, hallowed be your name
: Your Realm come: Your will be done; as in Heaven, so on earth
: Give us the bread of our need this day
: And forgive us our offences, as we forgive those who offended us
And bring us not into trial, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the Realm, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever: Amen
. For if you forgive men their faults, your Father who is in Heaven will also forgive you
. But if you will not forgive men, your Father also forgives not you your faults
And when you fast, be not sad like the hypocrites. For they contort their expressions, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have gotten their reward
: But, when you fast, wash your face, and anoint your head
. that you may not be seen by men as a faster, but by your Father who is in secret: and your Father who sees in secret, will reward you
. Place not your treasure on earth, where moth and rust ruin, and where thieves break in and steal
. But place your treasure in Heaven, where no moth and no rust can ruin, and no thieves break in nor steal
. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also
. The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye will be sound, your whole body will be full of light
! But if your eye will be evil, your whole body will be dark. If then the light that is in you be darkness, how great will be your darkness
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will honor the one and ignore the other. You are not able to serve God and money
Therefore I say to you: Be not worried about your life, what you will eat, and what you will drink; nor about your body, how you will clothe yourselves. Is not the life more important than food, and the body than clothing
Look at the birds of heaven; which sow not, and reap not, and gather not into storehouses, but your Father who is in Heaven feeds them. Are not you more important than they
? And who of you that will be worried, can add to his stature a measure
And about clothing, why are you worried? Consider the lilies of the desert, in what manner they grow. They toil not; and they spin not
. Yet I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory, was clothed like one of them
And if God so clothes the grass of the field, which exists today, and tomorrow falls into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, you lacking in faith
Therefore be not worried; nor say, What will we eat, or what will we drink; or with what be clothed
. For all these things the people of the world seek. And your Father, who is in Heaven, knows that all these things are required by you
. But seek you first the Realm of God, and his righteousness: and all these things will be supplied to you
. Therefore be not worried about tomorrow: for tomorrow has its own worries. Each day has enough of it's own trouble

Chapter 7

. Do not judge, and you will not be judged

. For with the judgment that you judge, you will get; and the amount you measure out, so will it be measured to you

? And why do you observe the straw in your brother's eye, and do not notice the beam that is in your own

. How dare you say to your brother, Allow me to pick the straw from your eye; when a beam is in your own eye

. Hypocrite! Take the beam from your own eye; and then you will see clearly to take the straw out of your brother's eye

Give not give consecrations to dogs: and cast not your pearls before swine; lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you apart

. Ask, and it will be given to you: search, and you will find: knock, and it will be opened to you

. For the one that asks, receives: and he that seeks, finds: and to him that knocks, it will be opened

? For what man is there among you, of whom if his son asks for bread, will he extend to him a stone
? Or if he ask of him a fish, will he extend to him a serpent
If you then, who are evil, know how to give to your children what is good, how much more will your Father who is in Heaven give good things to them that ask him
. Treat others the way you would have them treat you: for this is the Law and the prophets
. Enter you in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad the way which leads to ruin; and many are they that walk it
! How small the gate and rough the way that leads to Life, and how few are they who find it
. Be heedful of false prophets; who come to you in the garb of sheep, but underneath are wolves on the prowl
? And from their deeds you will know them. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes; or figs from thistles
. Every sound tree bears good fruits; but a rotten tree bears bad fruits
. A good tree cannot bear bad fruits; nor can a rotten tree bear good fruits
. Every tree that bears not good fruits, is cut down and thrown into the fire
. You will know them by their fruit
. None who cry out to me, My Lord, my Lord, will enter into the Realm of Heaven but only he that does the will of my Father in Heaven
Many will plead to me on that day, My Lord, my Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name expelled demons ? and in your name worked many miracles
. And then will I declare to them; I never knew you. Be gone from me, you evildoers
. Every one therefore that hears these my sermons, and acts on them, will be like a sensible man who built his house upon rock
And the rain fell, and floods rose, and the winds blew; and hurled upon that house; and it fell not, for it had been set on rock
. And every one that hears these my sermons, and acts not, will be like a foolish man that built his house on sand
. And the rain fell, and floods rose, and winds blew; and they struck that house, and it fell; and it was total ruin
: And so it was, when Jesus had finished these sermons, the crowds were moved by his teaching
. for he taught them as one having authority; and not as their scribes and Pharisees
